When it comes to choosing your next pick-up lease, these four are top of the leaderboard!

If you’re looking for a commercial vehicle that can take you from the work day to the family holiday and back again, a pick-up lease is one to consider.

Workhorse, family run-around, weekend camping trip, carting rubbish to the tip – if you’ve got a task that needs doing, the humble pick-up is the friend you need.

Though not quite as versatile as the traditional boxy van (no roof, low sides), if you’re mostly carting around your tools and the odd pallet, a pick-up is an excellent option – and easily doubles as a family vehicle too. You’ll never run out of space for the weekly shop and going on holiday will be an absolute breeze.

And with plenty of options on the table, from single cabs for business use to double cabs that can fit five adults in, there’s sure to be a pick-up to suit you. Though more common in countries like America with wide open roads and towns spaced hours apart, pick-ups are becoming a more common sight on UK roads thanks to their car-like driving and van-like versatility.

A pick-up is a fantastic option for a business van lease: dual-purpose vehicles that can carry people and over a tonne of cargo at the same time attract a flat benefit-in-kind rate, no matter how many emissions they produce.

But which pick-up is right for you?

We’ve lined up four pick-ups available to lease now, so you can easily make the decision on which of the bunch is right for you.

Ford Ranger

Ford Ranger

Ford knows what they’re doing when it comes to commercial vehicles.

Not only is the Ford Transit the quintessential van, but the Ford Ranger is the UK’s best-selling pick-up – and for a good reason.

Though there’s no hybrid or electric model available yet (though watch this space – a hybrid or electric Ranger is tipped to be released with the next-gen models), it still stands up as a practical and versatile vehicle, perfect if you need it solely for your business, or when you need it for your home life too.

There’s plenty of customisation on the table so you can adapt your Ford Ranger lease to suit your needs, with single cab, super cab, and double cab options available.

If you’re planning on shifting people as well as tools, you’ll want to opt for the double cab, while the entry-level single cab has more space for your kit than you’ll know what to do with (it boasts a max payload of 1,177kg and can tow up to 3.5 tonnes).

The interior is all practical, with a finish that can take a bit of a bashing without looking too scruffy, taking you from the working week into the family weekend with ease. There’s plenty of storage, the high driving position gives you a good view of the road, and the comfortable seats are more supportive than most.

At its heart, this is a work van, which does mean some compromise if you plan on using it as a family wagon – especially if you’re used to a conventional SUV or estate.

But for a van that can do both, the pick-up is unparalleled. And the Ford Ranger is one of the best on the market.

Toyota Hilux

Toyota Hilux

Another best-seller, the Toyota Hilux nails the balance between utilitarian practicality and enough street cred to make it a viable everyday family truck.

It’s been on the market since 1986, with Toyota managing to shift more than 18 million Hilux’s in that time. Though the Ranger has come and nabbed some of its popularity, especially in special edition Wildtrak form, it still stands up as an excellent option if you’re after something that’s not completely work focused, with plenty of creature comforts to keep everyone happy.

But even with its cool lifestyle appeal (including heated leather seats and a touchscreen infotainment system on the top trim models), the Hilux remains a dependable workhorse that’ll adapt to suit your needs.

Like the Ranger, it comes in single cab, extra cab (with small suicide doors to the rear), and double cab options, with the former offering the most space for all your clobber, and the latter giving you a second row of seats to cart about people, not just tools.

With a payload of just over a tonne, the ability to tow 3,500kg, and a load bay that measures 1,525mm by 1,645mm, it’s a versatile workhorse. And it’s capable of off-roading too, should your business not be conducted solely on nice tarmacked roads; with a lofty ground clearance of 310mm, a wading depth of 700mm, and a hill descent assistant on most of the range.

Tough, hard-wearing, and easy on the eyes – there’s very little to dislike when it comes to the Toyota Hilux.

Isuzu D-Max

Isuzu D-Max

Isuzu have proclaimed themselves to be the ‘pick-up professionals’, and they aren’t half wrong.

Though the pick-up market in the UK has changed massively in the past few years, with manufacturers like Nissan and Volkswagen pulling their offerings, Isuzu are still forging ahead with the Isuzu D-Max.

It’s been their focus for a while now, after binning off historic models like the Trooper and the Rodeo, and in the last few years Isuzu have begun to pivot (much like Toyota and Ford) to a more ‘lifestyle’ market – though the original recipe hasn’t changed much.

There are still single, extended, and double cab options on the menu to cater for businesses of all shapes and sizes, and a whole host of trims so you can find the D-Max to suit both your business and your lifestyle, from the entry level Utiliy model right through to the posh V-Cross.

And with the move into the trendier end of the market comes a wide difference in interiors.

The top-spec V-Cross gets leather armchair-esque seats and a 9in infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while base spec Utiliy models are much simpler with hard-wearing materials and a CD player with DAB radio.

Though families will appreciate the fluffier elements of the V-Cross, the Utility model still stands up as a very good work vehicle – and the D-Max, whichever version you opt for, is one of the safest pick-ups on the market.

Euro NCAP granted it the full five-star rating, and it comes complete with standard safety systems like lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, autonomous emergency braking, and an intelligent speed limiter.

Ssangyong Musso

Ssangyong Musso

Affordable, refined, and spacious, the Ssangyong Musso is an excellent rival to top players like the Ranger and the Hilux.

Though only available as a double cab, it still stands up as a great contender for your next pick-up lease, with a comfortable interior, plenty of space for five adults, and a choice of bed lengths so you can pick the Musso that fits your business.

If you’re using the Musso solely as a workhorse with added space, the entry-level EX trim does the job – and then some – with its basic DAB radio system, hard-wearing interior, and clever cabin storage. But if you’re looking for a pick-up that lightens the family load, step up to the Rebel trim for added kit- including roof bars, a rear camera, and an 8in infotainment system.

But if it’s load space you’re after, the Rhino comes with a 1.6m long bed, as well as front and rear parking sensors, a 9in infotainment system with sat-nav, and a payload weight of 1140kg (matched by the two-door Ford Ranger XL).

You can’t go far wrong with any model from the Musso range though.

They’re all great value for money, with practical touches like a standard plastic bedliner, a 12V/120W socket in the load bay for use with power tools, and a selection of hooks so you can strap everything down and stop it from rockin’ and rollin’ in the back.

For the more safety conscious, opting for the higher spec models also brings extra safety equipment, including the standard six airbags, parking sensors, blind-spot assistance, and rear cross-traffic alert.

And with an impressive seven-year/150,0000-mile warranty, the Ssangyong Musso is almost guaranteed to never let you down.
